Dreamweaver OS9 to OSX file transfer

message from matsonst on 17 Jul 2004
Hello,
This is my first post. Im very Intermediate at Dreamweaver and ran into a
problem. I was running Dreamweaver MX on OS 9 and decided to upgrade finally to
OS X (10.3). I backed up my complete Hard Drive on an external drive thinking
all my files would be there when I opened up OS X and imported them.
Unfortunatly, I cant import them or I am doing it wrong. Can anyone give me
directions to do this. I have about 10 websites I need to import over to my OS
X version of Dreamweaver MX.. Thank you very much for your time and efforts,
Seth

Some more info is needed.
1- Can you mount the external HD? That is, can you see it on the Desktop?
2- What do you exactly mean when you say you "can't import them"? Did you
export the sites using the export function and them copied your local root
folders?
3- Describe the steps you have done to restore your data from the external
drive to your computer.

Yes, I can mount the disc and it shows up on my Hard Drive. Well, I never
exported them from Dreamweaver MX on OS 9. So, this is where Im at. I found
some info in my Sytem folder in the preferences but not sure exactly what to do
next.

is the old drive bootable?
there's a difference between mounting and booting.

is there some step i've suggested where it seems to go awry?

If there's 10 sites, just manually re-entering the site info is easiest if
the suggestions so far aren't working. Tip- click the ADVANCED tab at top of
site definition wizard so you can type the info in quickly.

If you don't have the ftp info on paper, the previous msg gave the link to
navbars.net and the way to pull them out from the Prefs files.

If really lost email me.

first- need to put the Local Site Folders on the new machine.
Suggestion- put them in the "Sites" directory for You as a User. Then you
can view them using Apache if you want.

Then- the site definitions.

~See at bottom of this IF the old drive is Bootable. Hold down option key
when booting and you'll get a listing of boot drives you can pick from. Or
use System Prefs-->Start Up Disk to pick it before shutting down~

If not bootable-
Search the old files for
Dreamweaver MX Prefs
It would be in System Folder-->Preferences
Move a copy of it to the System Folder-->Preferences folder on the new
machine (the classic Prefs folder for os9 on the new machine)

Then, probably the easiest is to uninstall 2004 and then do the install
again. The installer will find the old Preferences and should copy the site
definitions up.

Do a find for
Dreamweaver MX 2004 Prefs
Should be one for the Admin, and one for any Users who've used Dw.
Move them to someplace else for now.

Toss the Dreamweaver MX 2004 folders (one under Programs, one under every
user in Users-->THAT User-->Library-->Application Support

Run the installer
As far as i know- the sites should copy up because it will "see" the MX
Prefs file

You will have to the last step below to correct the site defs to the current
location of the local site folders.

Something much easier if it's possible-
If your backup drive is Bootable- boot it up.
Open Dreamweaver MX
Dw menu-->Sites-->Edit Sites
select a site and click Export
check the box to export ALL info including ftp
Save the .ste file
lather-->rinse-->repeat for all sites in list

Boot up from osX
open MX 2004
dw menu-->Sites-->Manage Sites
Import the .ste files

That puts the site definitions into 2004
Now open each site def in turn, and reset these items to where they are on
the new machine-
Local Info pane- location of local folder
Site Map pane- location of "homepage"

If nothing works to get the Sites into the list-
As long as you have the old Prefs file, the ftp info can be extracted from
it manually. See http://www.navbars.net -->resources-->I Lost My Password
