Is there some kind of counter one can put on a site to monitor traffic that
is NOT visible to the public??

FAQ #84:
Check with your hosting provider. Most provide either or both of raw
logs and a logfile analyzer. And skip the visible counter and third
party counters.

The particular one is local and does not provide any such services. In that
instance, what could you recommend??

Change hosts. What are you paying this one?

Because it's our ISP and I'm only using the space on a personal website,
don't want to put money into it since it's just a for-fun site.
